About Beaches

Australia has over 10,000 beaches — more than any other country on Earth — and you could visit a new one every day for over 27 years without repeating. From the world-famous golden sands of Bondi Beach to the pure white silica of Whitehaven Beach, the rugged red-rock shores of Western Australia's Cape Leveque, and the wild, windswept beaches of Tasmania, Australia's coastline is breathtakingly diverse. Beach culture is central to the Australian way of life, and the country's beaches consistently rank among the best on the planet.

Top Highlights

Whitehaven Beach

Consistently ranked among the world's best beaches, Whitehaven stretches 7km along Whitsunday Island with 98% pure silica sand that stays cool underfoot. The swirling sands and turquoise waters of Hill Inlet at its northern end create one of Australia's most photographed landscapes.

Bondi Beach

Australia's most iconic beach is a crescent of golden sand framed by sandstone headlands in Sydney's eastern suburbs. Bondi is the birthplace of Australian surf lifesaving and home to the famous Bondi Icebergs ocean pool, Sunday markets, and a year-round beach culture.

Turquoise Bay, WA

Located in Cape Range National Park on Western Australia's Ningaloo Coast, Turquoise Bay offers direct access to the Ningaloo Reef — simply wade in and drift-snorkel over coral gardens teeming with tropical fish, turtles, and reef sharks.

Cable Beach, Broome

A 22km stretch of pristine white sand meeting the turquoise Indian Ocean, Cable Beach in Broome is famous for its spectacular sunsets and the iconic camel trains that traverse the shore each evening — a quintessential Australian outback-meets-ocean experience.

East Coast Beaches

Australia's east coast is home to the country's most famous beaches. In Sydney, Bondi, Manly, and Bronte are iconic urban beaches with excellent facilities, surf lifesaving patrols, and thriving cafe scenes. North along the NSW coast, Byron Bay's beaches combine world-class surf with a bohemian atmosphere, while the Sapphire Coast offers uncrowded gems. Queensland's Gold Coast features 57km of unbroken golden sand and some of the country's best surf breaks. The Whitsunday Islands in tropical North Queensland offer a completely different experience — sheltered white-sand beaches surrounded by the Great Barrier Reef.

West Coast & Northern Beaches

Western Australia's coastline is vast, wild, and stunningly beautiful. Perth's Cottesloe Beach is famous for Indian Ocean sunsets, while Rottnest Island's 63 beaches and bays offer crystal-clear swimming. Further north, Turquoise Bay at Ningaloo is one of the world's best shore-snorkelling spots, and Cable Beach in Broome stretches an astonishing 22km. In the far north, Cape Leveque's red pindan cliffs meet turquoise waters in a landscape of startling beauty. The Top End's beaches, while spectacular, require crocodile awareness — always check local signage and swim only in designated safe areas.

Beach Culture & Safety

Beach culture is integral to Australian life. The volunteer surf lifesaving movement, born on Bondi Beach in 1906, is one of Australia's proudest institutions, with over 170,000 members patrolling beaches across the country. Always swim between the red and yellow flags at patrolled beaches. Australia's ocean pools — saltwater pools carved into rocky headlands — are unique to the country's coastline, with over 100 pools along the NSW coast alone. The Bondi Icebergs, Bronte Baths, and Mahon Pool in Maroubra are particularly stunning. Beach barbecues, fish and chips at sunset, and the ritual of the morning swim are quintessential Australian experiences.
